If you use our LMS or gradebook/assignment module for continuous assessment during the scholastic year, we can now refine the calculation in subject specifications for your grade reports. If you want to include only exams or project grades, MySchool can be configured to show these. The average will be calculated across these types only.
Choose to show individual averages for each type if you want to give even more details to the students and the guardians. Decide whether to split theory and practical types using topics.
If you are a school in Malta, this is ideal for the SBA assessment system.
Are your assignment types configured correctly?
To ensure that you can break down your averages correctly. Make sure the types are included in the average calculation. Check out this article explaining the configuration panel. Also, consider activating topics to help Educators group assignment types together on the grade grid. Why not add colours to the types as well?
Classify the assignments correctly
During the year, Educators will log homework, classwork, practicals, quizzes and more in the grade grid and the average will show all assignment types included.
The class-based assessments have an average of 50%, whereas when the Home/work classwork types are included in the term average field. The year average is 58.57% (59) |
In the above example, we have class-based assessments and regular homework and classwork. The Institute only needs to include the four class-based assessments in the final year report.
NB: The grade grid here represents a full scholastic 'is schedule' term. Ask your CSM for advice if you would like to give a full-year overview to your Educators in the grade grid.
Create your assessment in subject specifications
Open the subject and add the assignment average assessment type. In the below example, we have chosen to show the year-long average (59%), and an average per type (Class based on assessment & Homework/Classwork).
Open the Blue cog for the assignment average types. Select the year-long term to include all assignments of this type submitted for the whole scholastic year. Open the assignment type field and refine the type to homework.
For added styling, you can group the averages on the report card using the section groups options.
Do the same for the class-based assessments, we used 'Term exam as an assignment type.
Review the grades
The assignment average is a number so can be included in a formula. In this case, we have taken only the Class based assessments and the total exam grade. A new formula is created with these two values and a 30/70 weight added.
The guardians and students are still shown the other values, and they act as performance indicators but are not included in the final compiled result field.
How can I show each Class based assessment score?
To show each assignment separately, you would need to create an assignment type for each and ensure that only one assignment was classed within that type.
So in the example instead of 'Term exam', add Term Exam Q1, Q2 etc as separate types.
Why is the average not calculated as a simple mean average?
MySchool assignment averages have weights per assignment and type. These will still influence the calculation of the assignment average even though you have restricted the type. Make sure you understand how these averages are calculated using the audit tool.
